Editorial notes: This Essay was found as a ‘draft’ entry in Everything2. It was last updated on 03/05/2011. To me, molecular biology is that part of biology that is concerned with the molecules that make up biological systems. It is concerned with those molecules’ lives, and the way they interact with each other. It manipulates molecules to test hypotheses. Although it may look...
Stargate Universe
Editorial notes: This Essay was found as a ‘draft’ entry in Everything2. It was last updated on 03/05/2011. I’ve always been sympathetic to science fiction, but never really ever loved any of its progeny. For example, I’ll always have fond feelings towards Star Trek: The Next Generation for its naive utopianism, but could never take its campy plots seriously. That said...
The Inner Life of a Cell
Editorial notes: This scientific analysis was found as a ‘draft’ entry in Everything2. It was last updated on 03/05/2011. In 2006 Harvard presented a short movie they’d contracted called The Inner Life of a Cell. This eight and a half minute production was a 3D animation of (ostensibly) what a cell could look like on an atomic level*. This forms the final chapter of my three...
Mere Christianity (BR)
Editorial notes: This Book Review was found as a ‘draft’ entry in Everything2 with the Summary section missing. It was last updated on 03/05/2011. C.S. Lewis is the British author best known for writing the Narnia series of books, but he also authored a number of books that discussed his religious beliefs, including this one – Mere Christianity. The book evolved out of a series...
Decoding the Heavens (BR)
Editorial notes: This is the first of two posts (bost written on the same day) dedicated to the Antikythera mechanism. Decoding the Heavens is a non-fiction book by Jo Marchant about the Antikythera mechanism, and was published in 2008. For the actual focus of the book, see the relevant node, although suffice to remind everyone at this point that the Antikythera mechanism was a Greek artefact...
Biotinylation
Editorial notes: In November 2010, Shai begins the second phase of his intellectual journey with an essay dedicated to scientific summation. Throughout 2010 Shai’s writings are focused primarily on book reviews with the occasional venture into reviews of science. This focus shifts in 2013 when Shai produces 24 science-related compilations. Between November 2010 and June 2016, Shai produces 60...
The Writing of the God
Editorial notes: This is Shai’s first dedicated write-up relating to Jorge Luis Borges. Borges is referenced in two earlier essays and between Jan 2010 and Nov 2017 is referenced by Shai 17 times. The Writing of the God (Spanish: La Escritura del Dios; also sometimes entitled The God’s Script) is a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. It first appeared in Borges’ short story...
Peter David Marathon
Editorial notes: This post was found in ‘Draft’ mode in the original blog and may be incomplete. It is published here in its original state. It was last updated on 16/04/2010 Now that I have a queue of posts scheduled I thought I could afford to start something new: a focus on a particular author. I decided to do Peter David. A caveat should be noted right here at the start: this will...

Ghost Ship (TNG)
Ghost Ship (Diane Carey) was the first of the novel [sic] TNG novels. Given that it was released in mid-1988 it was most likely commissioned some time during the first season, which is a round-a-bout way of saying that perhaps there's a practical reason for the poor characterization which will inevitably dominate this review.
