Shadow War of the Hawkman (1985)[I]:
- #1 The Shadow War of Hawkman – Origin story (chased criminals to Earth, decided to stay, esp. after their homeworld was taken over by a warmongerer who turned the entire populace mediocre); shadowy villains try to rob Hawkman’s (aka Katar Hol) antigravity belt, and have attacked Hawkwoman (aka Shayera).
- #2 Fallen Angels – H tracks the murderers, finding that they’re Thanagarians who’ve arrived to interrogate him to assist in their invasion of Earth.
- #3 My Worlds Opposed – H escapes with Hw (who didn’t die, it was their museum coworker Mavis Trent who did), and they go to the JLA in Detroit to erase all data so that the T doesn’t get it (needing to stun Aquaman and Elongated Man to avoid informing them, due to the T’s Absorbascon, which the H’s also own one, which can read all minds on Earth), but the T get the H&H’s ship.
- #4 No Sound of Clashing War – Defeat the T by blowing up the ship, in the epilogue we find out that the new museum artist is actually a T spy preparing for the continuation of the war.
Hawkman Special #1 (1986) – Assisted by (the villain) Gentleman Ghost, H faces the fact that the had to kill his fellow people and helps them move into the next life (via a spirit world meditation).
Hawkman volume 2 (1986-7):
- #1 – H&H try to work out where the invasion is, and come across the Shadow Thief who was sent to ask them if they want to rejoin their fellow T’s.
- #2
- #3
- #4 – Not really part of the Shadow War, just fighting some Kite-man and a flying dinosaur.
- #5 – A T operative tricks one of the H’s friends into becoming (again) Lionmane, but Hawkman is injured.
- #6 – Subdue Lionmane. The T abduct George Emmett (because for unknown reasons he is the only human immune to their Absorbascon).
- #7 – Darkwing (the first T to be awarded Honor Wings, and H’s mentor and who was serving as the head of a corporation involved in the planned invasion) attacks H as he is leaving the hospital. The duo fight the T, assisted by the G-Ghost.
- #8 – Continue to fight D, and destroy the H complex, in the end, it seems that Superman appears (to help)…
- The Duo assisted by the Gentleman Ghost attack a Thanagarin base/Hyacith complex, defeat Nightwing and rescue Emmett. Note that the Thanagarians have been using the Absorbascon to blackmail skilled humans into assisting their cause. As they’re finishing, Superman arrives.
- #9 – But it wasn’t actually S, rather a T (Byth?) with shapeshifting tech (apparently who’d previously stolen a bi-state tunnel). (Nb. Herbert Lesser computer guy who transmits all T data to media). H and GG defeat Byth, and destroy complex. Meanwhile Mr Trent is planning to sue the H&H (nb. anti-superhero sentiment following Legends). Nb. D has escaped.
- #10 – H exploring the burning complex, comes across a T warship and overhears plans to nuke the Earth in one day. They defeat D. At the end the real S arrives (having been called). Nb. the Absorbascon has been destroyed.
- Next installment is AC#588 (wherein we learn that Byth was the original criminal the H&H chased to Earth). And wherein they defeat the fleet but are left moving full speed towards the sun. (See Note: “Superman #2“)
- #11 – Manage to hyper-drive away, to T. Meanwhile Trent drops his charges after reading the data received from Lesser, but not so forgiving, so deletes it. Arrive on T, eventually attack Hyacith, who is only a robot being controlled by the ruling council. H&H are captured, to be executed.
- #12 – The H&H escape, and are assisted by Wingmen associated with an old friend of H’s father (Rul Pintar), but one of the council has invoked a chemical (created by the scientist who Byth made use of and killed) in the drinking water and turned most of the T on the planet into monsters. On Earth meanwhile, Mr Trent’s actions are gotten the H duo fired from the museum, and charges against Stewart. Discover that Byth’s pills reverses the change, so spread it over the planet. People request new king, so decide that Pintar must rule (since the T no long can be independent).
- #13– (Btw, Midway City then Gulf Coast). Their (Stewert) cop friend’s ex-wife is killed defending some papers, as they go to his hometown (GC) they are attacked by some sort of magical mask/ectoplasm. The killing was ordered by Mr Brundage (via Ms Hunter and her thugs), and they call upon Bolt (for unknown reasons yet). Last scene, looks like the dead wife walks out of the river with the papers she was carrying when killed..?
- #14 – The Hawks get into a fight with Bolt and the spirit (which was Brundages ex-partner who he’d killed). Brundage admits to hiring Lorraine to find and destroy the old partner’s contract, but is then killed by a sniper.
- #15 – Lorraine is taken away to the spirit world, but the papers are delivered, revealing that the mayor was blackmailing Brundage and that she had Lorraine killed for finding that out. Finally, GG calls upon Hw to assist in the spirit world.
- #16 – Hw is trapped in the spirit world (it was a trick, not GG’s fault, although he is there too, and helps), due to a deal Lorraine made in order to be allowed to gain her revenge. Meanwhile H comes across the spirit, and an alien pod that is responsible for his existence. He brings the soul back to life, and he immediately kills himself. H is left very dark.
- #17 – Great issue. H goes on a rampage, also saving people from a terrible storm. At end, uses alien ship to give corporeal form to Hw, L, GG, but L and GG must sacrifice themselves in order to restore balance and avert world destruction. A fresh day beckons…
Hawkworld Trilogy (1989) (Tim Truman):
- #1 – Amazing. Katar Hol joins the Wingmen. Father is Paran Katar, some scientist (inventor of wings); mixing in high society, somewhat free thinking but also v jaded. Dislikes Shayera but grows to like. Thanagar is the center of an empire, all subservient planets send what is demanded, incl. people. They are sent to hunt down weapons catchments, they’re of dirty (Thanagar?) origin. Pill popping unoriginal culture. Punk feel.
- #2 – bomb, dead shayera, kill dealer, it’s father, (byth), prison island, kill, priest, return but to downside wingless, much changed.
- #3 – underground hospital, a new shayera an orphan girl adopted by a mourning father, attack blyth who is now a mutant but who escapes, reestablished and does best to keep improving this messed up world.
