{"id":2757,"date":"2013-11-04T00:40:24","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T00:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/?p=2757"},"modified":"2019-07-22T22:45:46","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T22:45:46","slug":"monday-november-4-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/11\/04\/monday-november-4-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday November 4, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meta: I have written about epiphenomenalism on the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/10\/29\/tuesday-october-29-2013\/\">28-29th October<\/a><\/em>, and will continue to do so here in parallel with my reading of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iep.utm.edu\/epipheno\/\">IEP article on the subject<\/a><\/em> (beginning at section 4 therein).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 18-19th centuries assumed <strong>dualism<\/strong> and <strong>scientific naturalism<\/strong>, but given the observation that there was no need (for instance) to postulate the mental in order to explain neurophysiology (i.e. material mechanisms are sufficient), then there a &#8220;No gap&#8221; in which to place the mind. Thus <strong>epiphenomenalism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is the &#8220;<strong>Problem of mental causation<\/strong>,&#8221; that is used to say, (given dualism) &#8220;It is impossible that the mind should affect the body and therefore this must be an illusion,&#8221; (i.e. epiphenomenalism). To this we can add other relevant arguments:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Anomalous monism<\/strong> (<strong>David Donaldson<\/strong>): The mental aspect of an event is independent of the physical aspect and its physical ability to cause an effect (i.e. this is a particular paradigm for explaining epiphenomenalism).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Externalism<\/strong> (aka anti-individualism, see below for definition). Externalism says that &#8220;the content of mental states and the meaning of some natural language terms is a relational, or extrinsic, rather than a local, or intrinsic, property&#8221;. It pains me to be honest (I wink, tongue in cheek) and acknowledge that I am currently unable to provide an explanation for this perspective of epiphenomenalism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meta: The IEP article moves onto section 5, &#8220;<strong>Libet&#8217;s Experiments<\/strong>,&#8221; discussing scientific research relating to a belief that underlies epiphenomenalism, namely &#8220;There is a relationship (that we sense) between our thoughts and &#8216;consequent&#8217; bodily actions and thoughts.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meta: I have written about epiphenomenalism on the 28-29th October, and will continue to do so here in parallel with my reading of the IEP article on the subject (beginning at section 4 therein).
