It is not a dying world, although it is set in the shadow of one.\u00a0<em>Fiskadoro<\/em>\u00a0describes a vibrant culture, be it one scarred by\u00a0radiation\u00a0and\u00a0bombs, employing\u00a0shibboleths\u00a0to ward off the present: &#8220;the quarantine will be lifted&#8221; (<em>is there even one?<\/em>), &#8220;Bob Marley will come&#8221; (<em>who do they mean? and what?<\/em>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Here and also south of us, the beaches have a yellow tint, but along the Keys of Florida the sand is like shattered ivory. In the shallows the white of it turns the water such an ideal sea-blue that looking at it you think you must be dead, and the rice paddies, in some seasons, are profoundly emerald.<\/em>\u00a0<small><strong>(Ch.1 &#8211; first lines)<\/strong><\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The people speak a creole, live in shantytowns (or maybe ruins of towns from\u00a0<em>before<\/em>); they make life. Strange markets distinguish\u00a0paper money\u00a0from\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"coins\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/coins\">change money<\/a>. Societies search for a history &#8211; one day they find a book on\u00a0Nagasaki, and they wonder, was this the bomb that made their world? or could be from still before? is it all fiction? Strange religions mix\u00a0Bibles\u00a0and\u00a0Korans\u00a0and\u00a0Bob Marley\u00a0and\u00a0Bruce Lee.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8216;Whatever happen go happen. Fugdat shit!&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0<small><strong>(Ch.4)<\/strong><\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are strange parallels in the peoples&#8217; memories. Mr Cheung&#8217;s grandmother\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"forget\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/forget\">remembers<\/a>\u00a0in her\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"sleep\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/sleep\">waking<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"nightmare\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/nightmare\">dreams<\/a>\u00a0fleeing Vietnam at the\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"Vietnam War\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/Vietnam+War\">American War&#8217;s<\/a>end.\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"End of days\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/End+of+days\">An end of the world<\/a>. Mr Cheung&#8217;s clarinet student is taken by a cult who cut his groin and\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"seep\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/seep\">take<\/a>\u00a0his memories with a blue pill. They want to\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"forget\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/forget\">remember<\/a>\u00a0the world but can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In a world where nothing was familiar, everything was new. And if you can&#8217;t recall the previous steps in you journey, won&#8217;t you assume you&#8217;ve been standing still? If you can&#8217;t remember living yesterday, then isn&#8217;t your life only one day long.<\/em>\u00a0<small><strong>(Ch.6)<\/strong><\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Johnson is the son of an American\u00a0diplomat. Interviewed about the novel he says that he tried to convey those years. Being a diplomat&#8217;s son\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"transubstantiation\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/transubstantiation\">transformed<\/a> into a story of a survivor. The story was cut loose from the events of survival, becoming absorbed in the perspective of the\u00a0<a class=\"populated\" title=\"Denis Johnson\" href=\"https:\/\/everything2.com\/title\/Denis+Johnson\">boy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Every day he imagined the moment when his father, thinking of nobody, totally cut off from everyone he knew, totally as if he&#8217;d been born swimming for his life and never known anything else, gave up and drew the first breath of water.<\/em>\u00a0<small><strong>(Ch.4)<\/strong><\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fiskadoro\u00a0is\u00a0Denis Johnson&#8217;s\u00a0second novel, published in\u00a01985.
