A few thoughts on Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n

Every culture has its ancestral story. This is one of mine.<\/p>\n

This is a story of survival.<\/p>\n

The Holocaust happened<\/p>\n

The Holocaust happened because of a world embedded deeply in antisemitism.<\/p>\n

It was embedded deeply with antisemitism because every country in Christendom had subjected Jews to second-class citizenship, to be denied, ransomed, evicted and killed \u2013 for some two thousand years.<\/p>\n

Entire countries would kick the Jews out because of hate.[1]<\/sup><\/a>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Holocaust happened on the steps of a civilized world.<\/p>\n

This day of remembrance is a day to reflect on the stories that brought us to this place.<\/p>\n

Once, long ago,<\/p>\n

Though the references<\/a> are vague,<\/p>\n

We were slaves.<\/p>\n

Then we were free,<\/p>\n

And it was a whole thing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And<\/a> we had a homeland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then there we exiled.<\/p>\n

– And a new book<\/a> inspired<\/p>\n

Reasons to hate us.<\/p>\n

Country by country,<\/a><\/p>\n

Generation by<\/a><\/p>\n

Generation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Until on the brisk<\/p>\n

Of a brand new modernity<\/a>,<\/p>\n

They did something worse.<\/p>\n

And it was a holocaust<\/a>,<\/p>\n

Which is from Greek:<\/p>\n

It means \u201csacrifice by fire\u201d.<\/p>\n

Then we fought<\/a> for a homeland.<\/p>\n

And we built<\/a> it for ourselves.<\/p>\n

And that is the story of my people.<\/p>\n
