Shai was a deep thinker which influenced the way he chose to live his life. This meant that to meet the challenge of describing his intellectual journey, I would actually need more than to simply understand his intellect &#8211; I would also need to live his intellect. A daunting task indeed. Alas, we are where we are and as I was grappling with his writing, attempting to glimpse into my son&#8217;s mind through his vast body of written work, I often lamented the one-sidedness of this review. I wish he were here, with me, explaining, teaching, elaborating, correcting and expanding on his meaning and answering the myriad questions still burdening my own mind. Shai was not only a prolific writer but also an avid reader and it is thus fitting that his first digital post is a book review, the first of <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/reviews\/book-review\/\">68 book reviews<\/a> written between October 2004 and March 2016 (only three of which were published in the Gaia Online Writers Forum).<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>18\/02\/2009 &#8211; First Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In February 2009, Shai starts his rich blogging career with a <a href=\"https:\/\/notriptocleveland.wordpress.com\/\">blog<\/a> dedicated to reviewing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wes_Anderson\">Wes Anderson films<\/a>. Of the five posts written between February 2009 and April 2012 and dedicated to this topic, four are written on the blog and one is found in Shai\u2019s Google Drive, perhaps written there with the intention of copying it across at a later stage.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>13\/12\/2009 &#8211; Second Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In December 2009, Shai creates a second <a href=\"https:\/\/pastfarpoint.wordpress.com\/\">blog<\/a> dedicated to reviews of \u201cStar Trek: The Next Generation\u201d novels. Shai publishes <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/blog-posts\/pastfarpoint\/\">17 posts<\/a> in this blog between December 2009 and March 2011.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>21\/01\/2010 &#8211; Third Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In January 2010, Shai embarks on his third blogging journey with a <a href=\"https:\/\/pinballmania.wordpress.com\/\">blog<\/a> dedicated to reviews of pinball machines :-). This venture is short-lived (one day only) with only one full review published and one incomplete draft.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>22\/07\/2010 &#8211; Google Drive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai continuously explores different channels through which he might best document his life&#8217;s research work. Having traversed from hand-written notebooks to on-line writers forums and blogs, he begins using his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Drive\">Google Drive<\/a> as a repository for documents he wishes to store on the web. It seems highly likely that some of his work, originally written and stored in Google Drive is later copied to one of his various blogs. Altogether, this compilation of Shai\u2019s works contains <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/google-drive\/\">61 essays and posts<\/a> retrieved from his Google Drive.<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned Shai\u2019s notebooks, so I\u2019ll pause here to add a few comments on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Shai refers to his notebooks a number of times and as early as 2010, in a <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2010\/12\/02\/dec-2-2010\/\">journal entry published in Everything<sub>2<\/sub><\/a>, he makes the following observation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nI have a habit of copying down quotes and making notes in 50c notebooks while I\u2019m reading. Historically \u2013 i.e. before I fell into this ditch \u2013 those would never be read by anyone else. Some of them migrated to word documents \u2013 or more recently my friend Microsoft OneNote \u2013 while others are hidden in drawers and boxes with old school books at my parents\u2019 house. I don\u2019t want to make it sound like I\u2019ve got a thousand books jotted down, but I do have quite a few, and I hope, s-l-o-w-l-y to transmute them over into this place.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A more detailed description of Shai\u2019s notebooks is documented in a <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2014\/07\/22\/planning-a-future-for-this-meta-journal\/\">later entry<\/a>, from 2014, where he makes specific references to 5 notebooks, each having their own specific designation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nInsofar as I\u2019m aware, some Black Notebook content was copied into Things I write here, but only up to a point. This allows me to raise an apropos issue: the use of physical notebooks too. Note also that at the present time the <strong>Black Notebook<\/strong> has been filled (and along with the <strong>Big One<\/strong>, is considered as an archive). And so new notebooks have been introduced into the rotation. These basically include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Small Blue Book<\/strong> \u2013 was basically valued and utilised for its practical size.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Green Book<\/strong> \u2013 has become a place where I write things slowly and nicely and have to date begun to have filled a small section enough to give a feel for some rhyme or reason.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Yellow Spiral<\/strong> \u2013 Began for use of noting whilst reading, to which has organically been added further reading-related noting, including mind mapping; but also, some space has been used for a diary experiment to document positive actions daily and health, since this book has a place to date pages.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>22\/09\/2010 &#8211; Everything<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In September 2010, Shai begins to share his writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everything2.org\/\">Everything<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everything2.org\/\"><sub>2<\/sub><\/a>, or E<sub>2<\/sub> for short, a collaborative web-based community consisting of a database of interlinked user-submitted written material. Between September 2010 and July 2015, Shai submitted <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/everything2\/\">60 items<\/a> to this writers forum.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>30\/09\/2010 &#8211; Beginning of Phase I &#8211; Western Philosophy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In September 2010, Shai begins the first phase of his intellectual journey with an <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2010\/09\/30\/the-story-of-thales-2\/\">essay<\/a> dedicated to the Greek mathematician, astronomer and pre-Socratic philosopher, Thales of Miletus. This the first of <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/philosophy\/westernphilosophy\/?order=asc\">80 essays<\/a>, written between September 2010 and July 2015, dedicated to analysing the thoughts and writings of the great ancient Greek and classical Western philosophers.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>17\/10\/2010 &#8211; Jorge Luis Borges<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If I had to name three individuals who had a lasting impact on Shai\u2019s philosophical outlook, I\u2019d have to say they are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Argentinian poet, essayist, and short-story writer, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/tag\/Borges\/?order=asc\"><strong>Jorge Luis Borge<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The French philosopher <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/tag\/Levinas\/?order=asc\"><strong>Emmanuel Levinas<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The German philosopher, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/philosophy\/westernphilosophy\/classicalphilosophers\/kant\/?order=asc\"><strong>Immanuel Kant<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this day Shai composes his <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2010\/10\/17\/the-writing-of-the-god\/\">first essay<\/a> dedicated to Jorge Luis Borges. Borges is referenced in two earlier essays and between January 2010 and November 2017 is referenced by Shai 17 times.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>06\/11\/2010 &#8211; Beginning of Phase II &#8211; Scientific Inquiry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In November 2010, Shai begins the second phase of his intellectual journey with an <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2010\/11\/06\/biotinylation\/\">essay<\/a> dedicated to scientific summation. Throughout 2010 Shai\u2019s writings are focused primarily on book reviews with the occasional venture into reviews of science. This focus shifts in 2013 when Shai produces 24 science-related compilations. Between November 2010 and June 2016, Shai produces <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/science\/?order=asc\">60 write-ups<\/a> related to varied scientific matters.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>13\/03\/2011 &#8211; Superman (I)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai was always fascinated with cartoon characters and, at least as his written coverage is concerned, mostly with Superman. Between March 2011 and December 2014, Shai writes <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/reviews\/book-review\/comics\/superman\/?order=asc\">nine articles<\/a> dedicated to this superhero and in November 2014 he starts a blog dedicated to reviewing Superman novels.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>24\/04\/2012 &#8211; Story Writing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of Shai\u2019s unique talents was writing stories in the style of famous authors. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2012\/04\/24\/twilight-as-directed-by-wes-anderson\/\">story<\/a>, retrieved from his Google Drive, he convincingly imitates a vampire genre, Twilight-like movie script, as if it were directed by Wes Anderson.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>06\/02\/2013 &#8211; Evernote<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In February 2013, Shai adds <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evernote\">Evernote<\/a> to his suite of repositories. This is an application designed specifically for note-taking, organising, task lists and archiving. This proves to be the ideal tool for him to better control his ever-growing research notes, stored primarily up to this point, in handwritten notebooks and documents stored in his Google drive.<\/p>\n<p>Between February 2013 and January 2015, Shai uses Evernote to document <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/evernote-entries\/?order=asc\">128 entries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The summary included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/02\/06\/philosophy-readings-through-time\/\">first Evernote entry<\/a> is significant for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It lists a wide range of philosophical books Shai had read over a period of nearly 16 months (between March 2013 and May 2014), starting with early Greek philosophy and ending with what Shai refers to as &#8220;<em>contemporary philosophers<\/em>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is the first mention Shai makes of his idea of developing a <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/bibliom\/\">Bibliom<\/a>, a term which recurs 4 more times in future posts. The term is originally coined to describe a complete body of text, and in using the term here, Shai is likely referring to his intention to create lists representing the ultimate reading references in any particular domain, in this case, Philosophy. In later posts, Shai refers also to his intention to develop a Literature Bibliom.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>07\/04\/2013 &#8211; Science Reviews<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai publishes his <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/04\/07\/science-review-neural-decoding-of-dreams\/\">first<\/a>\u00a0in a <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/science\/science-news\/\">series of 30<\/a> Science News, documented mostly in Evernote between April 2013 and October 2014.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>04\/05\/2013 &#8211; Research Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/05\/04\/priorities-2\/\">documents<\/a> an Evernote entry discussing his methodology for researching and acquiring knowledge, and his preferred methods for storing notes taken during the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai devises a system of four tiers of acquiring knowledge:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nA tiered approach to study: Science can first be treated by perusal of journals; this perusal is the first-tier (tier 1) of study and thus offers the weakest investment per item. Articles may be selected and segregated according to use (tier 2). Articles can be followed-up on in a befitting manner (tier 3) which may require research (tier 4).<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The notes arising from this process of knowledge acquisition are designated as cJ, Content Journey, or cD, Content Destination. Content collected while conducting research can be maintained in some formats while the summary of that information is destined to be published in an electronic blog to allow for ease of editing and retrieval.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>21\/06\/2013 &#8211; \u201cMeta\u201d data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai documents his interpretation of <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/06\/21\/lockes-theory-of-knowledge\/\">Locke\u2019s Theory of Knowledge<\/a> which, he explains, \u201c<em>is famous for being based on the principle that the mind is a blank slate<\/em>\u201d and that the mind is \u201c<em>gaining everything it knows by experience<\/em>\u201d. The need to acquire experience in order to gain knowledge is a principle by which Shai chose to live his life. Knowing now that this was his guiding view, makes many of his actions and decisions over the years easier to comprehend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One other thing to note is the introduction of the term <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/meta-data-categories\/meta\/\">\u201cMeta\u201d<\/a>. This is the first of 20 times that Shai uses this term. I struggled for some time to fully understand his intent in introducing this term but believe that the \u201cMeta\u201d paragraphs represent his thoughts about his own thoughts, and his reflections about his own method of research. True to his phenomenological journey, Shai places his own experiences at the core of his observations, at a level very much similar to that which he assigns the subjects of his observations.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>15\/08\/2013 &#8211; Fourth Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In August 2013, Shai starts his fourth <a href=\"https:\/\/meanwhileii.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a>, entitled \u201cmeanwhile-II\u201d which he dedicates to \u201c<em>witticisms, epiphanies, and emotional breakdowns<\/em>\u201d. The content of this blog reflects a change in Shai\u2019s overall mood, writing style and direction. While his earlier writings are considerate, scientific and outward-looking, his focus now shifts and, while he continues to produce first-class essays on philosophical and scientific matters, he allows his own state of mind to be revealed in his writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between August and October 2013, Shai posts <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/blog-posts\/meanwhileii\/\">13 entries<\/a> in this blog.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>16\/08\/2013 &#8211; Daily Journals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/08\/16\/friday-august-16-2013-2\/\">first<\/a> of 51 Evernote entries titled according to the date on which they were written, making this a personal, chronological journal of observations, lessons learned and conclusions, together with an element of diary writing.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>16\/09\/2013 &#8211; Immanuel Kant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although Shai refers to Kant in earlier essays, this is the <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/09\/16\/monday-september-16-2013\/\">first<\/a> where he is analysing Kant&#8217;s writing and philosophical approach by analysing his &#8220;Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics That Will Be Able to Present Itself as a Science&#8221; (often referred to as Kant&#8217;s Prolegomena). Altogether, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/philosophy\/westernphilosophy\/classicalphilosophers\/kant\/\">23 essays<\/a> are related to Kant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through his analysis of Kant&#8217;s work, Shai provides a glimpse into the method he uses to prioritise and order his reading.<\/p>\n<p>He says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nI read philosophy in order to behold ideas I might otherwise have never considered. In doing so, I am acknowledging superior thought, and also an appreciation of value. Some things are more valuable than others. Because of time and life and all such worries, I seek the best in preference to the rest. Thus, in order of priority, I study the best, listing them in places first, second and third. So that&#8217;s not to dismiss all the rest. In fact, even withstanding practical concerns, there is value in &#8220;the rest&#8221;, albeit reduced. So I&#8217;ll still read up on the summaries of the minors, but far less than I have to date, and with an eye that sees them in their place and as such.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>He continues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nAnother lesson I have learnt is the significance of reading the greats&#8217; primary texts. Think for thyself. Secondary texts, especially in particular cases, can be valuable, and valuable, sometimes, in their own rights. But again: engage the best in dialogue, and not through their self-identified transmitters and drones.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>A short while later, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/10\/07\/monday-october-7-2013\/\">on Oct 7, 2013<\/a>, Shai makes some further observations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nThe very first thing I would say about Kant is that he is the greatest philosopher of which I am aware. As I defend that title, keep in mind that anything I say about him at this level of discussion must be reduced over and over, so that every statement or sentence could as easily be extended and explained into paragraph upon paragraph at least.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>To which he later adds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">So, as I was saying: Kant is the greatest. Thus he is also my favourite.<\/div><\/div>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>21\/09\/2013 &#8211; Phenomenology (I)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I picked the <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/09\/21\/perspective-of-war-as-chaos\/\">article from this day<\/a> as the sections \u201c<em>Learning to reading to learn<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Misc comments on writing<\/em>\u201d are typical of Shai\u2019s phenomenological journey and his reflection on his own intellectual endeavours and achievements. As explained at length in other places, Shai\u2019s journey has two main components: the first being the domain of knowledge under investigation, be it Philosophy, Science etc; and the second, his reflection on his journey and the lessons he draws from these reflections.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>05\/10\/2013 &#8211; Phenomenology (II)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2013\/10\/05\/saturday-october-5-2013\/\">Evernote journal entry<\/a> written on this day contains material that is fundamental and pivotal to understanding Shai\u2019s life philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Based on his analysis of Kant\u2019s writing, Shai makes the following observation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nIn trying to understand our understanding of the world, we are placed in a strange position where we know what to do, but we don\u2019t know how to do it. Thus we have to study ourselves experiencing before we can dissect the elements that make it possible. We can do this in the same way that we dissect a language we already speak. But another analogy reveals the issue differently; we have notes from a new currency, and thus we must test its potential for exchange against each other currency to determine which ones allow and which don\u2019t. The point of this second analogy (which poor as it is, is also my own) is that we cannot know which categories (cf. exchanges) are viable, first without testing, but secondly, we have no instinct to know when we are attempting a comparison that is illegitimate.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai\u2019s journey includes two main components, as he is looking to achieve two separate outcomes:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>To acquire knowledge, not for its own sake, but rather for the purpose of placing it within his own devised value system. Shai alludes to this as he uses the analogy of money. Not all areas of study are born equal (so to speak). They are not all of the same \u2018value\u2019. To discern their relative value you have to compare them to each other so as not to make the mistake of inadvertently placing one above or below the other.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">As you read through the volumes of data, analysis and research in this compilation, bear in mind that most of it is the product of this process. It is the progressive collection of data, in a systematic and elaborate manner, progressing from one domain of knowledge to the next, all according to a plan, the core and principles of which are outlined in this Journal entry.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To self-study \u2013 and I can\u2019t describe it better than Shai has:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n&#8220;We have to study ourselves experiencing before we can dissect the elements that make it possible.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">Shai ascribes great importance to exploring his own experiences and extracting their meanings. The space is too short to elaborate on this here but if you knew Shai, you would see a pattern of behaviour and a pattern in the choices he made that fit this model perfectly. For Shai, the world was his laboratory and he used people, places and events as his lab apparatus.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>17\/10\/2013 &#8211; 750 Words<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early in August 2013, Shai joins a site called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/750words.com\/\">750 Words<\/a>\u201d which encourages members to submit a daily post consisting of roughly 750 words, approximately three pages. The site explains its purpose as: \u201c<em>The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, that it will help clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>13\/01\/2014 &#8211; Emmanuel Levinas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is Shai&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2014\/01\/13\/philosophy-bites-podcast-a-person\/\">first reference<\/a> to Emmanuel Levinas.\u00a0 Levinas&#8217; ideas appear to have made an impact on Shai&#8217;s outlook as he refers to him <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/tag\/Levinas\/?order=asc\">11 more times<\/a> in the following three and a half years, most notably in a post entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2015\/10\/16\/perceptions-of-wisdom-in-the-talmud-with-emmanuel-levinas\/\">Perceptions of wisdom in the Talmud with Emmanuel Levinas<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>08\/09\/2014 &#8211; Fifth Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In September 2014, Shai publishes his fifth <a href=\"https:\/\/meanwhileiii.wordpress.com\/\">blog<\/a>\u00a0entitled \u201cM-III\u201d (short for Meantime-III) and subtitled \u201c<em>The Traveller is the Journey<\/em>\u201d (not to be confused with a later blog entitled \u201c<em>The Traveller is the Journey<\/em>\u201d, published in 2015).<\/p>\n<p>In the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/meanwhileiii.wordpress.com\/about\/\">About<\/a>\u2019 page of this blog, Shai shares his observations on his place in the world:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>So far most I can tell is that this place<\/strong> (world\/reality\/experiences) <strong>is filled with shapes and colours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>I have a space ship<\/strong> (body\/vehicle\/me) <strong>that is the centre of my world, and also my bridge to the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>There are other bodies<\/strong> (people\/space ships\/consciousnesses) <strong>in this place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>They walk and talk, and act as if this is home. While only two posts ever got written in this blog, and only one published, Shai writes extensively about this and other superheroes, altogether dedicating <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/content-categories\/reviews\/book-review\/comics\/\">15 essays<\/a> and articles to these comic book characters.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>26\/01\/2015 &#8211; Seventh Blog \/ Beginning of Phase III &#8211; Eastern Philosophy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shai starts his seventh <a href=\"https:\/\/travelleristhejourney.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a>, entitled \u201c<em>The Traveller is the Journey<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This blog represents the entry point into the third major phase in Shai\u2019s journey. Having previously dedicated substantial research effort to reviewing and documenting the great philosophical minds of the West, he now commences his exploration of the wisdom of East, in particular the mystical aspects of the Hindu and Buddhist philosophies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a later article from January 2016 entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2016\/01\/30\/meeting-buddha-on-the-road\/\">Meeting Buddha on the Road<\/a>\u201d Shai explains his thought process as he embarks on the study of Buddhism. He says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nThe search for answers is fuelled by curiosity, directed by questions, and treads along a pavement of non-delineated possibility<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">I have turned to Buddhism to learn about meditation. I meditate to unfurl the self, clean the glass darkly, and strengthen the mind. The Buddhists promise only an understanding of suffering and a means to its end, though there are many milestones along this road. I wish to end my suffering, too.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three months later, in April 2016, Shai summarises his \u2018takeaway\u2019 from studying Buddhism in an essay entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2016\/04\/27\/reflecting-on-a-study-of-buddhism\/\">Reflecting on a Study of Buddhism<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nHaving never been exposed to Buddhist texts, I was amazed at much there was, both in terms of primary texts and their commentaries. And with that breadth comes complexities. Some parts of Buddhist philosophy are very difficult and require either a deep exposure to their ideas (analytically speaking) or deep practice of their ideas (experientially speaking).<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">He later adds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nStudying the path in its whole gave me an appreciation for its interconnected nature. Originally I conceived of it as a \u201cbunch of core principles\u201d. But once studying it, it becomes an epiphany to realise that right intention follows from right view, that the right actions follow from these, and that the right concentrations are directed by the needs of those dynamics.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is not surprising then that alongside his exploration of the Eastern philosophies, Shai once again takes the path of self-reflection, examining his life choices, evaluating his opportunities, setting objectives and planning for the future. It begins with his notebooks and having moved into digital media, he begins to use blogs and writers forums as the means to store and present his final writing products. The development of digital writing seems to have evolved in two main channels. Initially in Evernote (mainly throughout 2013-14) and later on (mainly in 2017) using the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gmail\">Gmail mail application<\/a>. Some of Shai&#8217;s longest compositions, eg. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2017\/03\/26\/constellations-in-hebrew\/\">Constellations in Hebrew<\/a>\u201c, and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2017\/08\/31\/howl\/\">Howl<\/a>\u201d, were written in Gmail.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/all-posts\/gmail-drafts\/?order=asc\">39 Gmail Drafts<\/a> are recorded in this compilation.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>16\/10\/2015 &#8211; Beginning of Phase IV &#8211; Judaism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this day Shai publishes his <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2015\/10\/16\/perceptions-of-wisdom-in-the-talmud-with-emmanuel-levinas\/\">first post<\/a> dedicated specifically to Judaism. This is significant as it is the beginning of the fourth phase in Shai&#8217;s intellectual journey. After having first devoted a substantial body of writing to scientific inquiry and to the study of ancient and classical Western philosophers, and having recently commenced his study of Eastern Wisdom, Shai begins slowly at first but then, from August 2016, with gathering intensity, to document his study of Jewish philosophical sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further analysis of Shai&#8217;s writing during this period reveals that his study of Jewish sources is also achieved through three mini subjourneys:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Study of the <strong>Talmud <\/strong>(and the Mishnah).<\/li>\n<li>Study of <strong>Jewish mysticism<\/strong> \/ Kabbalah.<\/li>\n<li>Study of the <strong>Torah <\/strong>(by applying lessons learned from the first two).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>29\/09\/2016 &#8211; Self Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I mentioned that from early 2015, Shai is increasingly documenting his emotional state of mind as he attempts to deal with his physical and mental challenges. I chose to highlight this <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2016\/09\/29\/we-lived-in-a-farmhouse\/\">autobiographical essay<\/a> because the last paragraph is Shai&#8217;s beautiful, yet painful, reflection of his continuing battle with drug addiction. The analogy he draws between his journey and Frodo\u2019s journey in the epic trilogy of &#8220;<em>The Lord of The Rings<\/em>&#8220;, is deeply moving as it describes Shai&#8217;s view of the torturous path out of drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">On the way home I thought about two contrasting descriptors for my life. I was at the late beginning of an epic journey that takes me from being a heroin addict to a valuable professional doing some pretty cool stuff. And I envision the long road Frodo imagined lay between him and Mordor. Except my Mordor is hopefully less violent. Although the two heavenly objects were created to provide physical light, they are also a potent reminder of the Kabbalistic imperative that is incumbent on the \u2018created\u2019 to aspire to the same revelation as projected by the \u2018creator\u2019.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><strong>31\/08\/2017 &#8211; Consolidation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2017\/08\/31\/howl\/\">This is one of Shai\u2019s longest essays<\/a>, written in seven instalments, six within a period of just ten days in 2016 (from 13th October to 23rd October 2016) and the seventh, a year later, on August 31 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reflecting on Shai\u2019s complete collection of writings, this can be seen, perhaps, as the zenith and culmination of his intellectual journey. As he was writing this essay he was acutely aware of his physical and mental state and is expressing his anguish via a \u201chowl\u201d, a painful cry, reflecting perhaps on the complex decade long journey he had undertaken and its possible futility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai\u2019s intellectual journey is an inward-looking phenomenological one where he studies his own consciousness, striving to understand his own thought process in observing and studying diverse areas of knowledge. The beginning of the search is through a deep examination of Western philosophy, commencing with attempts to understand the meaning of the \u2018self\u2019 through an exploration of Kant, Spinoza and others. He then explores \u201c<em>the interaction of the \u2018I\u2019 with the world it occupied<\/em>\u201d. To that end, he plunges into Buddhism and Hinduism. These give him \u201c<em>a minimal appreciation for \u2018different places to put your mind inside the mind<\/em>&#8216;\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Shai sums up his continuing journey as an attempt to answer four fundamental questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is this place?<\/li>\n<li>With what are we engaging?<\/li>\n<li>Who are we?<\/li>\n<li>What are the tools of engagement?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But before he addresses these existential questions, Shai takes a detour to present his credentials, his justification to be allowed to address these questions. He elaborates on his extensive study of the matters he believes he \u201c<em>needed to know<\/em>\u201d beginning with the teachings of Einstein and Wittgenstein.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nThe original spark was to comprehend how Einstein had changed the world without moving, and how Wittgenstein had defined the space for that to happen, changing the world, without moving.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He believes this necessitated a deeper exploration of philosophy, studying the writings of Plato, Spinoza, Kant, Schopenhauer and Husserl (a similar attempt to detail his qualifications, and in particular the journey from Einstein through to Wittgenstein\u2019s, is also found in an earlier essay, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetravellerslastjourney.com\/shai\/2016\/12\/12\/apology\/\">Apology<\/a>, written in December 2016).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next stage was Shai&#8217;s exploration of Buddhism, which introduced Shai to \u201c<em>an appreciation for an alien tradition, which contains some unique insights, and expand the application of the Western toolkit<\/em>\u201d, and Hinduism which \u201c<em>created awareness of the incongruity of certain phenomenological features which I would not have considered<\/em>\u201d. Molecular Biology and the Talmud, each helped Shai experience an \u201c<em>awareness of the incongruity of certain phenomenological features which [he] would not have considered [otherwise]<\/em>\u201d. Shai concludes with a study of <em>Seder Hishtalshelut<\/em> (Kabbalah) and Hassidic instructions for <em>Hit\u2019bonenut<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I suggest it is worth taking a pause here to note that Shai documented his intellectual and phenomenological journey in great detail and the 430 essays found in this compilation alone testify to his thoroughness. Having integrated and evaluated the various schools of thought from the East and the West, Shai is able to make some fascinating statements and arrive at far-reaching personal observations and conclusions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\nThere is more wisdom in Judaism than anywhere else I have ever seen. It frightens me. I don\u2019t think I would have appreciated it without my other explorations. Partly because sometimes there is mention of principles which \u2013 when seen in the light of some non-Jewish philosophy or architectonic \u2013 is hugely revelatory, creating new spaces, and yet was only mentioned in the Jewish text for a specific reason which invariably serves a ubiquitous thread that is the lived religion.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And in reference to the wisdom found in Kabbalah, what Shai refers to as the \u201c<em>utility of sefirot<\/em>\u201d, he writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n&#8230;no one in the East is doing anything like this, and for those who understand everything here, shows how the great truths in the East might be only relatively so, as if they found a small jewel that was grand enough to light a beautiful palace, not knowing that there is an entire palace made of jewels in Israel.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai\u2019s journey is a phenomenological investigation, in which he places himself at the core of the investigation. At each step, he pauses to confirm his understanding of his own experiences based solely on the domain he investigates. It is only now, as he writes this essay, that he allows himself to look back, perform a comparative analysis and, reach the soul searching outcomes arising from it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has taken me nearly eighteen months to reach the stage where I felt mildly comfortable writing this summary and I began the task with great trepidation and with a sombre appreciation that I could not possibly do it justice.
